Choosing a quality lubricating oil for diesel engine is essential to ensure the safety and performance of the vehicle, therefore, owners and mechanics should, yes, pay attention to this item.
Thinking of helping you, we have prepared this post with tips on the topic and what you should consider to choose the best lubricating oil for diesel engines. Read on to check out all the details!
Why choose the best diesel engine lube oil?
Initially, it is necessary to understand the real importance of lubricating oil for diesel engines. Its function, contrary to what many people think, is not limited to just lubricating the engine’s moving parts , such as pistons and connecting rods.
In fact, lubricating oil is an item that has other essential functions for the proper functioning of the vehicle, such as the following features:
- reduce the wear of parts and the formation of sludge;
- refrigerate the hottest components;
- minimize wear on parts;
- seal the engine against the possible passage of combustion gases.
In addition to these points, a quality lubricating oil also guarantees more time without having to change the oil, being a long-term economy, since in addition to reducing expenses with oil and filter, it also means that the vehicle does not have to stand still with frequency to perform this type of maintenance.
What to consider when choosing the best lubricating oil for diesel engine?
Now that you know the importance of lubricating oil, see below how to choose the best option for vehicles with a diesel engine !
Composition
A point that must be observed is the composition of the product, since a good lubricating oil must contain certain additives that guarantee maximum performance in its composition, such as:
- anticorrosives;
- antioxidants;
- antiwear;
- defoamers;
- viscosity improvers;
- detergents.
Types
In addition to the composition, the type of lubricating oil used in the diesel engine is also very important and, for this reason, it is necessary to pay attention to this point when choosing a product. There are currently 3 types, they are:
- synthetic oils;
- mineral oils;
- semi-synthetic oils.
The ideal, to choose the type of lubricating oil, is to observe what is recommended by the manufacturer of each vehicle. In general, the most recommended oil is mineral, but it requires changes with less mileage than synthetic and semi-synthetic oils.
Synthetic oils, on the other hand, have a longer period of change than mineral oil, since they provide more protection against residue deposits (sludge). However, it is recommended to associate them with quality fuels in order to preserve their properties.
In general, semi-synthetic oil is not indicated, since it is a mixture between synthetic and mineral oils and, for this reason, it can compromise performance and generate undesirable deposits that can damage the engine.
Viscosity
Currently, diesel engines require the use of multi-viscosity oils, as oils with this type of viscosity can quickly reach all places that need lubrication at the time of engine startup, due to their high fluidity even at low temperatures, which minimizes wear.
At higher temperatures, the lubricant must also keep the oil film in the right measure, in order to reduce the contact between the moving parts of the engine that work at high speeds and temperatures.
Thus, viscosity, in general, improves the durability of the entire set and, for the reasons presented, most vehicle manufacturers in Brazil recommend the use of multi-viscous oils.
However, certain automakers already recommend specific models for this type of vehicle to trucks and, therefore, the ideal is to observe the manufacturer’s guidelines.
